Create Beauty From Bread A Fascinating New Hobby

Create Beauty From Bread A Fascinating New Hobby

Create Beauty From Bread A Fascinating New Hobby

by S Dovedy

Every day thousands of men and women all over the world are discovering the fun and the satisfaction derived from making things themselves with their own hands.

In India, the land of arts and crafts, many articles of enduring beauty are to be found. Our ancient crafts are made from a variety of materials such as clay, grass, lacquer, gum and others. But the art of making beautiful miniature sculp- tures out of bread is an art that began in the West. Artists of wax portraits in the eighteenth century were known to make some of these portraits to formulae of their own, using materials from candle wax to potato and wheat flour. I like to think that instead of plain wheat flour or maida, some of these portraits were modelled from bread dough.

This art caught my eye when I was in America and on probing further into the subject, I discovered that it originated in Mexico. It holds promise for those in India who wish to express their creative selves in turning out beautiful things from the cheapest of materials—a couple of slices of bread!

I am quite sure that it will enjoy great popularity in India. I wish to express my deep gratitude to Mrs. Jennifer Prabhu and Major General D. K. Palit for their help, encouragement and advice.

I may like to mention that the coloured transparencies have been prepared by Rupinder Khullar.

About The Author:

Mrs. S. Dovedy was born in April 1914, in the Burmese town of Maymyo; she migrated to India during World War II.

Her interest in cooking, stitching, embroidery and doll making dates back to her childhood. Over the years she not only perfected her hobbies but kept adding to and diversifying her field through ideas, experiment and observation.

One would imagine that she has had some sort of training, but no, her work is all self acquired. Her japanese, Pixi and Indian dolls, clowns, pinecone owls, paper and cloth flower, smocked cushions (Which she demonstrated on the Delhi T.V.) and costume jewellery are to be seen to be believed!

The unique art of making beautiful flowers and miniature objects from bread dough added to her repertoire of hobbies when she was in America in 1972. She has mastered this art over the years; her entry of pansies in the 1976 Dehra Dun Flower Show won the first prize in the Artificial Flowers Section.
